Our particular kinds of programs offer:

A unique opportunity to increase the leverage of donors’ investors’ investments with our 1:3 to 1:16 average cost-benefit experience.

A unique opportunity to help the community prevent the blight of litter while promoting recycling and beautification pro-actively instead of reactively.

A unique opportunity to bring the entire community together in a way than teaches us all better ways to manage other community behavioral challenges.

Third, we should have our Development and Economic Analysis function in place to handle our fund raising guidance tasks. This group should be organizing to compete for KAB’s many grant opportunities as well as for local grants and corporate gifts.

Fourth, before we present opportunities, we can make sure we are prepared by having the following in hand:

NOTE: The list below is Non-Profit oriented but applies in principal to governmental agencies as well. Semper Paratus!

State tax exempt status: current state certification.

EIN#, DUNS#, approved sales tax exemption form.

IRS tax exempt status: federal 501(c)(3) letter…both printed and electronic. A fully completed application to the IRS is okay if that is all you have but some funders cannot give you support until you have your letter of approval from IRS. Having filed as a state level non-profit corporation is likely not enough…but ask as you go along, one prospect at a time!

Form 990: previous year's tax form from accountant or bookkeeper, if available.

Articles of Incorporation.

Vision statement: agency's board approved statement of purpose and goals.

Mission statement: agency's board approved statement of purposed activities (in general) to pursue that vision.

Goals: What we hope to achieve over the next 2 to 5 years.

Bylaws: current and up-to-date.

Current board members list: names, contact information, professions, affiliations, and current terms

Most recent audited financial statement: previous year's report from accountant or bookkeeper, if available.

Program budget: report from accountant or bookkeeper, if available.

Project budget: specific to present proposal.

Qualifications of paid or pro bono executive director: curriculum vitae background, accomplishments, degrees.

Qualifications of pertinent staff: cv for personnel who will oversee or participate significantly in the specific project.

Letters of support: community leaders, funders, etc.

Program evaluation statistics on persons served: who, what, when, where, how and so what?

Agency background information: brochures, accomplishments, projects, newspaper articles, etc. if appropriate.

GuideStar listing and Volunteer Match listing

Trade association memberships: KAB, state KAB office, state recycling program, EPA, state environmental agency, volunteer management association, etc.

Registration with area volunteer center, center for non-profit management, Chamber, council of governments, etc.

Statement of Commitment of Board, i.e., 100% of our board members, without exception, have made appropriate financial contributions to support our mission within the past year.
